One of my local antique stores has several albums of first day covers for sale. The albums seem to be roughly broken up into decades or partial decades from the 1960's to the 1990's. Depending on the album, they contain "approximately 80" to "approximately 120" covers. When I was at the store, I didn't have time to ask to see them, but they appeared to be nice leather-bound (or faux leather) albums (they were in a glass cabinet).

The asking price, depending on the album, was from $70 to $110. Not knowing which FDCs are actually in the album, is this price good, bad, or about typical?

Also, if indeed it is worth going back and asking to look at the albums, are there any particular covers you would recommend I look for?

Thanks!

A decent cover album for 100 covers can cost from $15.00 US and up......
Any time you can get covers for less that a dollar each in good condition, it's not a bad deal.

Personally, I'd say it would depend on the condition of the covers AND are the majority of the covers of a type and style that YOU want.

I agree with Tom - especially about the part of determining if they are worth it to you.

I would have to add that it would also depend on whether or not they fit into your current collection concept or something new you want to start.

As for the particular price, IMHO, it would depend on whether they were unmailed Artcraft or Artmaster or something similar and if they were postally used covers.

Sounds high to me..but then again if they are from the late 1930s to 1945 and CLEAN...when I buy a book of covers I am paying for the covers..the book gets thrown in...show the guy a book you like and ask him what he would take for it...everything is negotiable !! REMEMBER these guys selling first day covers usually do not have a clue what they are worth..i have actually had guys ask me what they are worth and I would give them a figure I liked and they would sell them..thats if they want to take some green home at night instead of putting the covers back...or I would pull a cream puff out and say I would give you 3 dollars for this...whatever works ...

I like the "cream puff" idea, especially considering my current budget. I love FDCs, but I am rather selective about which ones I get (although my criteria amounts to nothing more complicated than "Do I like that stamp?")

I don't think the actual seller is usually at the store (it's one of those large "booth" antique malls, actually), but sometimes sellers leave instructions with the owners, so its probably worth asking.

Thanks!
