Im a real beginner in Stamp Collecting, but I just happen upon a Stamp Event in my city today concerning the new Neon Celebrate! stamp. The artist, Michael Flechtner, was there and gave a little speech. Somebody said it was a "franking ceremony," whatever that means. On Display was a neon sign that is a replica of the original(Original is in Stamp archives in DC)and also Michael's 55 Bel Aire that he delivered the sign to DC in.

The Artist, Michael Flechtner:

He seemed like a pretty cool guy. I bought a few stamps and got a sheet signed by him. I also took a few event programs, put a stamp on them, got em stamped by the USPS people there and had it signed by the artist. I have a few extra of these if anyone here really wants one.
I know there not worth much, but maybe we could do a trade or somthing since Im new and have very few stamps.

O I suppose I should introduce myself a bit, I actually thought this was part of the CCF Coin Forum?, Im not sure if most members here are on there as well? Well my forum name there is the same, Cali_Nick. Anyway Im 29, live in Los Angeles.... the stamps I have are all from my Grandfather and a few Moderns I've collected that I liked. I suppose I like Coins and Currency mostly but I also have a small collection of war bonds, Germany, Japan, and the Confederacy.

I cant promise Ill be posting much on this forum, but Ill always be on the coin one. That said I dont think Ill have 50 posts on here for long time since I know nothing really about stamps and my basic questions could probably be found by a search.

Anyways since I cant technically trade with only 2 posts, Ill just say that the first 4 people that want a signed program with one Celebrate! stamp can have it for the cost of the stamp and shipping. The program is 8" by 10" so Im guessing the shipping will be about $3 in the US including the cost of a large envelope. If you dont mind it folded then of course less.

Nick

Cali- Sounds like you had a great day and interesting event. Welcome over here to the dark side. Always wondered why post in either coins or stamps didn't count on either forum. Great and generous offer and I'll bet there are quite a few that wish they had the post on the coin side to track you down. Bet it won't take long at all for 50 on this side since alot of notes , stocks , bonds and such all cross over the two passions. Besides if you run out of stamps to show I bet most would be enamoured by the engraving on some currencies . Engraving and specific engraver fans are a plenty.

That is a great way to get interested in stamp collecting. Sounds like you had a really good time. Bel Aire's are one of my favorite cars, love the fins! I really like the stamp design and love neon signs. Plus Glendale CA is a town that is nearby historic Route 66. Can't wait for you to get more posts under your belt.

Cali_Nick, welcome to the SCF forum. I like the design of the Neon Celebrate! stamp and look forward to getting my first one. I always enjoy going to stamp events and it sounds like your first was a great celebration of the stamps release.

Thanks for posting Nick, for a stamp collector this
all sounds exciting.
You know I've been collecting for well over 50 years
and have never been to an event like that.
You're a lucky guy.

I hope you will enjoy many, many years of fun collecting.
It's the greatest hobby on earth.

Thanks for the welcome, yeah someone found me through the Coin Forum already hehe. Yes it was a cool little event, I only decided to get a few items signed after I saw other collectors doing the same and I thought why not get a few extra for my friends at CCF.

Im going to pull out some of the old stamps I have and see what I have, Im sure nothing rare or valuable but I suppose theres a beginning to everything. Its a little intimidating trying to join in such a community where I am not knowledgeable and have such little collection amassed.

I love Route 66. I have a family member that is afraid to fly and since my family was originally from Chicago, I've done many a road-trip that way. A lot of route 40 follows the old 66 but we frequently get off the highway and drive through the main street(original 66) of small towns. I know I have some route 66 stamps around, but I think they were fairly recent (within last 10 years)

Some of the modern stamps I like are things like the purple heart and other military stamps. Im definitely going to get a sheet of the new Civil War stamps coming out as well.

Nick,
You must mean postmarks or cancellations. I have pretty good collection of pictorial postmarks that have a route 66 theme that I've been working on for about 5 years now. I would love to see what you have. I've only been as far West as Oklahoma on 66. One day my wife & I want to travel the whole historic road all the way to Santa Monica Pier.

If you are interested in special event and First Day postmarks checkout USPS.COM and its biweekly (thursdays)postal bulletin, the next one comes out on the 12th. They list all sorts of postmarks you can request.

Yeah I've been looking today and cant find the route 66 stamps I thought I had. It may have been a fancy travel brochure or postcard book that im thinking were stamps.

Nick,
I can understand that, I have a bad habit of picking up brochures, maps, pamphlets, travel magazines and they can pile up quickly. This is especially true while on the road.
