Information Needed.

My poor dad, I got upset with him when he sent away for an offer from Fleetwood for 3 for three of these covers one for each of the mints that minted the Susan B. Anthony dollar..they came in a nice imitation leather binder and he paid I believe $27.00 for them...i blew my stack...poor guy I told him that he knew nothing about stamp values and please not to do it ever again...i don't think he bought me any more philatelic items !!

that must of been a hell of a salesman to put a 6000K pricetag on it and get away with it!

The preface section addresses exactly what we're talking about here: Unscrupulous sellers and equally uninformed buyers that pay outrageous sums for what is thought to be rare and valuable stamps that are later found out to only command a small premium.

The funny part of all this is that I'm starting to learn quite a bit from this thread including all the technical names used for this and that. Believe it or not, almost every one of these posts have contributed to my knowledge. I thank you all!

Clake it is good to have you aboard and even better that you posted that thread. There are many (and I mean many) people that have been what I would consider "had" by unscrupulous people. The fact is that it is still going on today and I believe the more we talk about it and allow people to see what is really going on, the harder it becomes for those nasty people to operate. Your mother is by no means the only person on the planet to believe someone's fabricated story. That being said, the stamps are nice, unusual and certainly collectible. (just not at that price). I feel sorry for people that trust and it hurts all of us when it happen, because it just makes the world a little less trusting place. yes unfortunately those were the only ones purchased. Fishing for information about how much she paid for each is almost like asking her to retell details of a marriage gone bad. She remembers paying $925 for the Everest stamp and around $800ish for the others. The least expensive one was the Nixon misprint that she remembers. She didn't buy them all at once. The salesmen that called and pitched the sale to her were over the course of time per stamp. It went sort of like this:

"We noticed you purchased our Everest stamp on 9-14 and would like to offer you this very rare 1 and a half cent stamp that has an extremely rare perforation shift"

The funny part is I remember once, some years ago, of her telling me she had purchased some very rare, very hard to get stamps. I thought nothing of it as she usually is a very thoughtful intuitive person.

Well thank you Clake for sharing your story. At least she bought these because she was financially stable and able to make an interesting purchase. Its a valuable lesson learned anyhow. Nice pieces to have though! :) ~Ash
