Nice card!

Presumably issued by a private postal delivery company in Lubeck.

There were a number of local issues labelled "Hansa" from different German cities. I don't know if these companies were linked or if they just used the Hansa name for historical reasons. It's very appropriate for an old Hansa city like Lubeck.

I'll check my catalogue when I get home and see what I find.

Nigelc, Thanks for the information. Does that mean there is really no way to find out where it was sent from?

Hello,

I'm pretty sure it was posted in Lubeck and delivered within the city as these local companies were only allowed to deliver within their own towns or cities, not to other parts of Germany.

I just found this article which might be of interest:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lubeck

It has a very nice photo of the fortified gate that appears on the printed stamps on the card and some interesting info on Lubeck's historic role as "Queen of the Hanseatic League".

I've got home at last and have found the Michel catalogue info on the Lubeck stamps. There were two Lubeck private posts and this is from the second one which was only in business from January 1897 to March 1901.

The design of the stamps on the card is the same as that of a set of three adhesive stamps issued in September 1897. There's a note that post cards were issued with stamps in this design (and also with an earlier one) but it doesn't say anything about the designs of the cards. Apparently they also issued stamped letter cards and envelopes.

nigelc, That information really clears things up for me. Are Hansa stamps listed under germany or is there a separate section for them. Thanks again
David.

rod222I have downloaded photobucket in hopes of being able to get better scans but am having trouble pasting them to these posts. Are you familiar with photobucket. I can't figure the pasting out.
Thanks
David

Hi David,

There's a small Michel catalogue that just covers German local stamps. I've got an old edition from 1990.

Hi David,

If you look at your pictures in a Photobucket album and hover over one of them you should see a list of addresses. AT the bootom of the list is one called IMG code. Click on this and this address will be copied.

You can then paste it in a post.

As an example I took this IMG code from Photobucket just now:
http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/...ntpair-1.jpg

When I first pasted it into this post it came automatically with IMG and /IMG tags each in square brackets at the beginning and end of the address and with these it appears as the image below once I'd previewed or saved the post:

I hope this helps.
