I have a dilemma! I decided a while back that my main collection would be Union of South Africa and any other items of special interest. I have been slowly putting the rest onto stock cards ready for sale. The problem I have is what to do with all the part sets, single stamps and common items that I have.

My options at the moment are

a) Put them on pages per country and sell the pages.
b) Open a 5p/10p store on Delcampe and sell them individually.
c) Put them in a envelope till another day.

Today I was going through some of my Bechuanaland Protectorate and after getting all the sets together was left with an amount of singles - EG 45 copies of the SG 146 3d cat £1.50 used. What to do with them ? My end goal is to get rid of the clutter and only have items for sale and my collection.

South Africa and South West Africa are even more difficult as the earlier items are collected in pairs. The amount of single stamps I have are phenomenal - again no idea what to do with them.

Any ideas ?

Drew

i would either put them away and see what comes your way or group them up and sell as a grab bag type lot...

Grouping them sounds better as I want to get rid of them one way or another.

I'd probably group them together. Selling 5p singles could rapidly become a lot of work.

Either way, when it comes time to sell, let us know when and where, if you don't mind...

I think I will put the items up on SCF first and see how they go, most of these I have had for many years and never really done anything with them - hopefully they will find a good home.

LB I think we should definitely get a table at the market one day - I have quite a few stock cards ready to go.

I'm interested in South Africa but am so cluttered and unorganized I can't even tell you what I need vs what I have. I'd say lets trade some but I need to figure what I have other than just saying lots!

I put the excess Bechuanaland on SCF auction.

I have always struggled with keeping everything in some sort of order. Today alone I found two unopened envelopes for auctions I won a while back. Too many impulse buys I think!

Hi Nitrolures,

Looks like you've got the stamps mixed up - that one is from the hyphenated screened pictorials set - 2s6 Green and Brown - SACC 120. I am just about to leave for work - will give more info when I get in.

I just looked at what you are refering to and although it still is confusing and I would appreciate your imput . If they are the other printings fortunatly it was a $2 win with $2 shipping so I won't be teribly upset other than more misrepresenting. Bought quite a bit from this seller so He'll make it up to me . Was not in anyway trying to mislead you just going off of info from the auction without reading up on my own. Can still trade if you need them.

No problems Nitrolures - the early definitives of the Union are difficult, I struggle often

For this particular stamp there were three main printings :

Unhyphenated:

- London Pictorials
- Roto Printing Pretoria

Hyphenated:

- Hyphenated Pictorials
- Hyphenated and Screened Pictorials

The first step in deciphering these sets are to look for the hyphens between the words Suid and Afrika.

Yours has the hyphen so it can only be one of two printings. The 2s6d was left out in the hyphenated pictorials so it must be from the hyphenated and screened pictorials.

Now we need to get into the options for this set :

Colour:

- Green and Brown (SACC 120, SG 121)
- Green and Cinnamon Brown (SACC 120a)

Other shades are listed in the various catalogs - Grey Green

Varieties:

- Heatwave effect on hills. (SACC 120b)

This stamp was printed using cylinders 6919 and 17 ( Numbers appeared on the bottom left hand margin in red )

The South African Colour Catalog also lists cylinders 51 3 for the Cinnamon and Green and 51 5 for the Heatwave Variety.

SG has a cat value of £29 for a used pair. Another point to note is vertical pairs generally command less than horizontal pairs.

I hope this clears up a bit about the 2s6d with hyphen.

PS. never once thought you were trying to deceive - I just know with these issues they can easily be mixed up.

Drew

To me this thread is why SCF rules.

It is so refreshing to learn in a polite environment.

Great stuff! Thank you! KGV
