Neophyte Question About Grills

I have never, up to this point, owned a stamp in this category. However, a recent large lot purchase included three examples. You are allowed to whimper at the 24 cent value but I include it as I am likely never to have anything better to replace it.

These are as removed from the collection. What should I do to prepare them for a closer examination? Normally, I would soak to remove hinge fragments, etc., but I shall defer that until I know it is safe to do so.

Secondly, when I set about trying to find out what grill it is, what exactly am I counting? The indentations or the points (yes, I know they are the same but I guess I want to know what side of the stamp I should be examining)? One seems to have only a partial impression so what is usually done in that case?

The first is probably an "E" Grill and the 2nd is an "F" Grill.

E Grill, 11X13mm 14 by 15 to 17 points (Those little dot looking things)
F Grill, 9X13mm 11 to 12 by 15 to 17 points

I agree with stallzer that the first stamp is probably an E grill (Scott 88) and the second an F grill (Scott 94). The only 24c (A29 design) with a grill is Scott 99 (also an F grill).

Thank you for the information and for the link. I shall now try to get these three cleaned up and try to do a count of my own to match these up to what you have indicated.
