Assuming these are US (AM = American?) but when were they used / issued and where would they be found in scotts?

Nitrolures, these are German occupation stamps issued immediately after WWII. Check your Scott catalogue under 3N1 - 3N20.

Chris you will find several countries that had occupation stamps for the different german occupied zones after world war II.

These stamps had various printings.

American Print by the BEP, offset
British Print by Harrison & Sons , photogravure
German Print by Westermann, offset

Also various perforations.

Why can't anything be easy.
I mean I like the thrill of the hunt but golly geese batman 2 styles 3 printers plus different perfs. Might as well sit with a pile of 2c washingtons and play.
Allied Military makes sense -- my next assumption was these were printed in the morning and the second shift printed the PM's --just kidding I'm not assuming anything else.
