WOW!- is all I got to say.. I have to wonder why someone would have used the "other" known pair on a package as postage if it was so valuable? Does anyone know more about these or their back story?

I think you misunderstood. The missing pair mentioned was shipped via Fedex, not used as postage. What a heartbreak that must have been!

I also noticed the damage reported on the certificate and think that the asking price seems to ignore the condition.

Condition is meaningless when talking about great philatelic rarities. If you have a unique stamp, the sky's the limit on price.

A good example of this is the famous Icehouse cover. It is the only known copy of Scott US #122 on cover. The stamp is damaged and would be worth no more than $300-$400 off cover. On cover, it sold at auction for $431,000.
