Builder,

Grills were applied prior to a stamp being sold and used. The grilling process embossed a stamp with a pattern that was intended to allow ink from cancellations to soak into the paper, thus making it more difficult to clean a cancel off a stamp.

Here's an article off of Wikipedia ...

Builderr -- did you try the SEARCH button at the top of this page to search for GRILL ???

If you limit your search to the US Classics forum, you'll get about 8 pages of results.

KirkS, just to let you know in-case there is a minor programming glitch, I followed your instructions and 'No match' comes up.

This has happened many times with other Topics and I'm wondering if that's because I have not posted in that topic, which on occasions, has been the case. If I've posted in a Topic the Search always finds results.
