Could some one explain the different between a regular issued stamp and a re-engraved stamp. I have a Orvile Wendel Holmes, and my stamp album has a place for both types, regular/re-engraved
A reengraved stamp is one in which the original die or plate is altered slightly in order to differentiate it from the original printing.
Scott states that a die or entire plate may have it's temper drawn (reverse heat treating to soften the steel) and then altered. In the case of the stamp shown here, type II is the reengraved stamp. Scott states that in type II, the tie does not come in contact with the coat. From the photo provided, I would say you have a type I.
