Smauggie, just a quick question. Faded Carmine, a color or condition? It's just that both Blacks (cancels) appear identical! |

I meant faded Carmine (the carmine color of the stamp has faded. A condition, in other words.
The carmine pigment and the pigment used in the cancel are of different chemical compositions and react differently to various environmental conditions.
The cancel on the faded stamp is not bold and clear which is unusual for this machine cancel, suggesting that it also has degraded. In the famous words of Rod222, the stamp was probably soaked in hot water. |

Smauggie Thank you. I was pretty sure there are 2 distinct color variations, until you cleared the matter up. |

Well, there are four color varieties. Carmine, deep carmine, carmine lake and lake. The lower stamp isn't any of these. The upper stamp may be a color variety other than carmine, but that goes beyond my level of experience with color variants.
If you look at the image close up (you will have to click on the link in cdnum's post) you can see that in the upper image, the engraved lines are clear and sharp. Looking at the lower stamp, the engraved lines and dots are blurred, and you cannot see the white center-stalks of the leaves on the tallest palm tree (nearest the margin). To me this indicates a difference in the quality of images which suggest that the color we see on the lower stamp is not merely a function of pigment. |

Hi Smauggie, "To me this indicates a difference in the quality of images which suggest that the color we see on the lower stamp is not merely a function of pigment." -> This is one scan with 2 stamps. When I compare color, I always do that because it is impossible to really compare with 2 different pictures. Thank you! CDNum https://picasaweb.google.com/CDNumStamps/ (You can use + to zoom) |
