This came this week with a small collection of mint stamps I purchased. To me, this looks like a Scott 500, Type 1a. This digital photo is the best I was able to muster. Any help would be appreciated!

Brian

Brian, Type I Scott 499. Below is a detail of the toga rope.

Type I Toga Rope lacks definition especially on the top line.

Type Ia Toga Rope is well defined especially top line

Rileysan- Here's one of the used 500's I've found:

If you enlarge it, you'll see how much thicker the rope is- thicker than you'll see even on the Rotary Press stamps.

On the Type 1a, there was something like 10x the normal pressure added to the printing, thus the stronger and deeper images.

Hope this helps-- Ray

Found this older thread and thought I would post some possible 500's. I found these in a large box of kiloware -- so far, a very good bin of stamps. Per the 1847 website:

http://www.1847usa.com/washfrank/2c...1_03main.htm

I believe that I have most of the distinctions found in a Type 1a. The top stamp isn't too pretty, but the bottom looks like a good example. What are the group opinions?

Partime--yours are both off-set printings. They look like a type Va, #528. Sorry, they are not #500.

The postmark is making it difficult to get a clear scan.

stampcrow: Those are not #500...Both are off-set printed. Notice the crisper facial details of the off-set compared to flat plate printings. Yours appear to be #534B.

disi123 that reference stamp is brilliant, thanks. Yea the color on my pair isn't right for 500. I'm scanning another perf 11 just to get a look at it on the screen and compare. machine99 and Kevin thanks for replying.

I can really see the difference with this one. The sharpness of the image is much different. The diamond pattern in the neck. Also the button on mine is more of a blob where as the reference stamp has very distinct lined. This is excellent. Thank you.

Here is a nice NH SC500 obtained on ebay recently from a clueless seller who believed the identification ritten on the stamp tab. Hint: anybody who writes an identification on a stamp is clueless enough to misidentify it!

Here's a nice strip of 5 of canceled 500's... click the magnifier in Photobucket 2 or 3 times to get the full clear images...

Notice the strong impression... and on the scan of the reverse, notice the offset and the deep line indentations of the image frame also visible...

This is why I need a scanner so bad I have 35 copies of 500, hence my user name, most people who bring my there collections to ID have an offset printing stamp in the 500 spot. the toga line is greatly stronger as well the toga button. I have yet to see a copy of 500 that wasn't deep rose in color
