Going through my revenue documents and I was wondering what the earliest know date of usage for the RM3 is. It was first issued on May 1, 1755. The document I have is June 10, 1755. Volume 1 of Combs book "U.S. Embossed Revenue Stamped Paper" starts at 1798. The earlier revenues are from the colonial period, this one is from Massachusetts. Looks like I need another reference book in as I have several from this period.

That's very cool Art. I saw this on the other thread. I had relatives living in the Andover area around that time. Wonder if he owed them money too.

No cticism intended,
but sometimes it would be nice, if, when
placing a Scott identifier, you could
add a short explanation of what it is for the
non US participants in the CSF family.
RM3?

My apologies to my non US family members. The first U.S. revenues are identified by Scott as the RM series. These were issued by 1 of 16 colonies and are so indicated within the impression, being numbered by Scott as RM1 - RM41 with multiple denominations. These revenue stamps are embossed stamps, like a notary public seal or company seal, no ink. The first listed are from our colonial period being issued starting in 1755 and used through 1796. Prior to this period the stamps from Great Britain were used. After our independence from the King our country introduced the first of three Federal Issues being issued from 1797 through 1817 these being numbered RM44 - RM382 and again having multiple denominations.

I hope this isn't too confusing, after all, it was a confusing time.
