A baffling three-ring oval cancel (I've not seen one of these on a Victorian stamp before) - does anyone know what it is?

You posted this thread while I was working on my reply in the other Vic numeral thread.

It's a NSW cancellation, type 5. I believe the last numeral design used in NSW, although I'm no expert on that State.

Probably used post 1910 - watermark of the stamp would help confirm that. I can see that the stamp is Die III. Watermark could be V over Crown (V4), Crown over A, or V over Crown (V5.)
You'll need SG to distinguish V4 from V5, and it ain't easy sometimes. Look for the narrowness of the base of crown, that's the easiest way.

Baff, it's Crown over A.

I'm very surprised to learn that cancels like this were still in use after 1910.

It's a pity I have no chance of ever establishing the precise number.

Thanks again for your trouble!

Ok, I'm pretty sure it's the pale rose colour, first issued in 1907. SG number would depend on perforation, but SG 417a if it's 12 x 12˝. The next shade started around 1911, so the time frame fits.

Numeral cancels were used even onto the Kangaroo & Map series and KGV heads, and can be quite sort after on these. Even after the post offices were told to stop using them, some still continued. The barred numerals seen on Commonwealth stamps are listed along with rarity, although not as precise. Instead of an exact rating, they use "common on" or "seen on" etc.

Does anyone know anything about NSW 3-ring oval numeral cancels? I can't seem to find any other examples online or any information out about them. Are they rare? Does anyone have examples they can post?

Balf, I'd go for 248. ... So type 5 this was also a duplex cancel?
