It looks to me as if this could be a Precancel Type 206 but printed vertically instead of horizontally across the stamp. Further, the "N Y" in New York interestingly does not contain periods.

It appears there is 13 mm spacing between bars; city name is 3 mm below top bar and 2 mm spacing between city and state name.

Am I right in ID'ing this precancel as a Type 206 or are there other options to consider?

It appears to be a 206, the next best possible is 608. If it is a 206 it is uncommon is this form.
The version is omitted from from mention in the "Catalogue of the Printed Precancels of the United States", by Bruce Brunell. The stamp shown with a precancel overprint that is referred to as reading "up". I guess we will see!

Thanks for the comments. Very interesting info.

Here are two more Poughkeepsie, NY precancels. I think they are either a 424 or 485 but in both read down and read up varieties (the latter looks to be a double or triple strike).

In both examples, it looks to be 13 mm between bars; 2 mm below top bar to city name and 2 mm between city and state name.

Any help to confirm which varieties are shown would be most helpful.

Thanks.

That's not SH! The precancel is off center and carries over onto the next stamp. What you see is the SIE of Poughkeepsie from the previous stamp.

Thanks again for all of the info.

As for the 12-cent (Type 608) is there any variety that shows the precancel printed vertical instead of horizontal?

As for the two 20-cent (Type 485's) is there a separate listing for the "read up" or "read down" variety?

Or did these examples just happen to be printed any old way at the whim of the post office?

Some 'general' state collectors will want both varieties. In the PSS catalog no orientation varieties are listed. In the NY general catalog (Leahy), orientations are not noted on handstamps - they are listed on electro's [pss 200 series]. They were printed whimsically [sometime very whimsically on Fridays] at the local PO.

Thanks. Sounds like it would have been fun to work at the post office when these precancels were being made.

I think I read somewhere that the ink on these local precancels got all over the place making a big mess of things, which is what popularized using Bureau precancels.
