I never collected US stamps and I only have a few pages of them from my childhood collection. Tonight I just casually wondered which was my oldest... and I think it might be one of these three. I know they are probably worth only a few cents! Can you date them from the scan? Regards Gavin

For the 3˘ Washington's~ Could be either Scott# 136,158 ~if they have a grill~ then they are listed as printed in 1870-71. Also could be 1873 Scott# 207 w/o grill & re-engraved die type. The "pictorial" locomotive issue (Scott#114) is from 1869. Hope this helps you some as I'm just learning about these right now. |

The "grill" was an experimental security measure. It was to break the papers' fibers so the cancellation ink would penetrate clear through the stamp to prevent re-use. There are several types of grills too. I'm positive someone will provide a link to a complete description of everything known about grills. As far as the "banknotes" go, here I found this for you: Between 1870 and 1879 the contract for stamp printing passed among three different bank note companies. Each company changed the design of the stamps very slightly. National Bank Note Company issued some stamps with grills and some without, Continental Bank Note Company added secret marks and American Bank Note Company used a soft yellowish paper.

Agustanz, I asked the same question a week ago, there's a 'grill image' of a 3c Washington similar to yours under Topic "Grill Question". Hope that helps. |

The pictorial (blue 3c) all were issued with g grills and unlike all other is stamps the ones without the grills are the rarer ones the chances are it has a faint grill if you lookat the back of the stamp you should be able to see a load of indentations that are in a grid patern. |

Nice. Thanks everyone for the great info and I apologize for asking such basic things! I have been reading about early US stamps for the past couple of hours and found it very interesting. I think I would like a copy of Scott 1 now! Anyone know the price I would pay for a very rough copy? For me it's more having the historical item rather than the best. Then I can put it beside my Penny Black. regards Gavin |

I'm definitely no expert but a lot of the red postmarked #1's on ebay have been known to be fakes or replicas sold as originals. Maybe have one of the pro's look at if your serious about getting it. Although after a second look I have NEVER been burned by " Dr. Bob" so it's probably a safe bet. good luck. It would be great for a filler but it pretty rough. |

Funny that I have that very stamp on my ebay watch list. I just got a price for my avatar error stamp from Italy so I think I will have to pass on the Scott 1 for a while now... but I see one in my future Regards Gavin |
