This era of stamps is my weak spot...
Very nice set.

I have terrible trouble identifying stamps around this time period.
So my pages are seriously lacking...

I echo ratio411 comments on this period and my collection only has 6 of those stamps. Congratulations on filling that page Fred.

My problem is having a ton of stamps that all look the same to me,
and the album having page after page of holes that all look the same!

Getting each stamp linked up with the 'PROPER' hole is very frustrating
on most of the regular issues from 1870 to 1920. I have just about given up.

Wow! I'm salivating over that #507 <? (the black one in the number 12 position on the page)

ILS-- it's a 342, the earliest $1.00 in the Washington Franklin series...

The Washington Franklins can either be a nightmare, or a challenge. They are among my favorite issues. There are so many details to consider.

I just got the Martin Armstrong book (1979) and it raises as many questions as it answers. Does anyone know of a source of the Larry Weiss book on these issues?

The Armstrong book makes distinctions that Scott specialized does not. Also, he discusses the China Clay issues which Scott has delisted. Who is correct? Either the China Clay issues exist or they do not.

In addition to the dollar stamp being gorgeous, the 13 cent is also nice. Reasonable centering. Mine is not quite as well centered.

That $1 is nice and bright white, with the black giving it a nice contrast.
Another good thing is the cancel being off to the side.

This is the first time I've heard mention of these issues. And it's a great segue to my comment about these issues ... I'd be lost without SCF.

2011 is the first year I've put any effort into the Washington/Franklin issues of the early 20th century, and I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment about the difficulty of identifying the different types, colors, etc. I salute those of you with the patience shown in helping the rest of us learn to crawl/walk on our own, so-to-speak.

As for color varieties? I'm a hopeless cause
