Initials On The Back Of Stamp

This is the back of a US #69 I won last night o ebay. Are these initials MB likely the mark of certification or just an owners mark? There is no certification with the stamp.




Luckily the stain doesn't really show on the front.

Is it embossed in or just written? Could have been an inspectors mark from the paper maker, but if it were it wouldn't most likely be so perfectly aligned on the corner like that. most probably just an owners mark. just a thought as I am no expert on such thing.

I only have this screen capture from the site. It looks like a rubber stamp of the initials in purple ink.

I am no expert or even knowledgeable in this area myself but it is fascinating. These marks were forged at times also.

Good link, Puzzler. The marks are owner, dealer or expertizer marks. As Puzzler stated, they were often forged so as to create the impression of a certified stamp. On a US # 69, it's almost certainly an owner or dealer mark. There would be no need for an expertizing mark as a 69.

Their is no MB on the list of Expert Marks. Must be an owners or dealers stamp.

I have a #69 that I recently purchased on bidstart and it also has a name on the back.
M. Brettl...(the rest is cut off?)

Well, I'd say interesting they both use a rubber stamp with similar, though not identical fonts. I guess it's possible, but impossible to prove unless there was documentation of Mr. Brettl? also using the MB stamp.
A mystery.
How's the front of your 69 look?
I'm still waiting for mine. Bought it a couple of weeks ago and it's been caught in the limbo of our postal strike.
