The seller says the CV for this item is only $25, while the bidding - with over 4 hours to go - is already well over $100.

I'm curious. Is the price going way above stamp CV solely on account of the fine (to my eyes, extraordinarily fine) fancy cancel? Or is some other factor at work?

It may be a New York Foreign Mail killer and therefore highly desirable.

The postmark is fanatastic and the stamp has XF+ centering. It's currently at $105

It is a very nice cancel but not worth 4 times the cv especially since the stamp has a thin. However, it is up to the bidders to set the price and they don't have to worry about me participating in an overpriced item.

The rarity of clean, well centered, and visually appealing 19th century US stamps cannot be overstated. Catalogue values are usually tossed out the window for such stamps. If not for the thin, this could have easily brought $250, and possibly as high as $1000, at a Siegel auction.

Upon closer examination, I believe this one to be reperfed on the bottom, so my previous comments get thrown out the window with catalogue value. Damn ....

Just tried to find the cancel in Skinner & Eno, and I don't think it's listed...I see a 10-point wheel and an 11-point, but not a 16-point. Then again, I just got the book a week ago, and I'm far from proficient with it at this point.... Ray
