Phil, I would guess they were made for black and white reproduction in a book or magazine. Maybe even a Scott Catalogue or Linn's.

Maybe to be reproduced in exhibition literature... or more likely to be distributed to the philatelic press at the exhibition. Hey, any mention in any stamp publication would be free advertising!

These are likely official publicity photos sent out by the Monaco Post to newspapers and media outlets.
There are some official publicity photos of US stamps currently listed for sale on stampwants.

Exhibit Repro's, tattoo's, or whatever's. They are still neat looking and make an interesting addition to the curiosity section of anyones collection.

These are "black prints" I believe,
Lots of countries have produced them,
never met a black print collector though.

Black print means (I think) the original plates
are used, but with black ink.

These are fairly common for France and countries that have their stamps printed in France especially for the engraved prints.
There are various types of proofs and essays including a black print and they can be pretty expensive.
Here is a site with some info - http://www.comte-lavalette.com/epre...-artiste.php

There are a lot of black prints from Greenland. Here are 2 that were used to promote the International Stamp Exhibition in Denmark in 2001. The word "Sorttryk" translates to "Black Print". The word "Hafnia" is the Latin name for Copenhagen where the event was held. There is no glue or real perforations on these sheets and I am uncertain of their official useage but I suspect it may have been for a 5 Kronen deduction for admission to the event? Any help in this would be appreciated.
