I was using the search function and I couldn't find anything about an FAQ list for questions that are seemingly repeated on the forum. Does anything like this exist? I was thinking it may be easier to have it placed somewhere that people new to the forum could find it and we could avoid alot of repetition. What do you think? Would it be worthwhile for some of us to compile something like that? The only FAQ I could find was covering the technical side of using the forum!

A sterling idea Ajnabii,
but not practical I would imagine.

The best way, in my opinion to address this
are good (practical and boring) thread topics
in marriage with the "search" function.

Whilst the ideal is exciting to imagine,
all queries in a regimated format,
it isn't going to happen, because both, of the varying
degree of knowledge of the enquirer, and differing regional
interpretations / usages / verbiage of the poster.

As you can see, a lot of US collectors favour a Scott reference
in the thread title, whilst Europeans may not have access
to a Scott catalogue, and hence the thread is not so
recognisable.

The best we can do is try and avoid thread topics like
"look at what I just bought"
That can be said in the text of the post, the thread title should be
more direct if possible.

Well, if you guys/gals want to start a topic with FAQs and the answers, I'd be happy to put them up on a dedicated page.

Interesting thought. It could be filled with definitions, tutorials, references, and otherwise helpful information.

I could even build a section around it. An index with the FAQs than a link to a dedicated page with the answer for each question.

Bobby, this sounds like an interesting proposition. Is there any way we could get a chat function as well? I'd love to have a "chat" with some of the people I've met here. It would definitely make things here more interesting!

Could this FAQ be a kind of WIKI as there are no doubt different ways to look at stamps and terms used and worth of different pieces worldwide?

A link to an index page of that topic?

Nope, no chat. Sorry. We're here to share, not generate great discussion only to have it vaporize. Besides... what is chat? Real time discussion. What do we have on the forum? Real time discussion. Also, it's extremely difficult to find a forum with a chat room that doesn't have a foot of dust on the floor. Like clockwork, everyone wants it, they use it for a few days, then it collects dust.

I think you're reading too much into it. It would have nothing to do with values, that would be discussed here.

I think we need a glossary just for plain old definitions which is fairly easy and doable.

The FAQ would be for things like... "I just inherited a boatload of stamps and don't know where to start" then the answer would tell them what they need to get, how to sort, how to value, and stuff like that.

Please count me in as well!

If you wish to include "General":

- Philatelic Terms and Definitions
- Printing Methods (even with some photos)
- Inks and Colors (including shades)
- Watermark
- Perforations (even with some photos & illustrations)

I'm ready to help ....

I would suggest if we could create something like a "sticky thread" where it contains useful and informative "Links" for relevant subjects/thematic.

For instance, I have many links relating to "Philatelic" Cinderellas that I would like to share, but don't want them to be put in the closet eventually becuz of other numerous threads created by other members, if you know what I mean?

Is this applicable??

Cheers

Certainly the one item that gets batted around the most (IMHO) ist "I just inherited a collection from my Aunt Rosie. How can I find out anything about it". That would top my FAQ list. - jeff

Did anyone decide anything about an FAQ for collectors? I have to agree with Jeff about "I just inherited a collection" thats one that we often hear. Maybe even a list of reliable dealers and supply sellers?
