I must have looked at this stamp a dozen times and first example still looks to me as if it reads "BETROIT" rather than "DETROIT".

I'm sure it's just an optical illusion given the position of the precancel overprint over the "United States Postage" banner of the stamp, but it makes an interesting conversation piece, so I thought I'd post it:

Yes the darker spacing between the United/States gives the illusion of a B, but it is just an illusion!
