Hope I post correctly...

My dad passed away recently and left a small collection of stamps. He did not really collect and may have received them from someone else long ago. I know nothing about stamps and neither did he. How do I find out what I really have?

You posted correctly, and I'm sorry for your loss. Welcome to the forum. Do you have the ability to scan some of the collection to post here. and we can look at what you have.. or use a digital camera? Another way for you to get really involved would be to go to your local Library and see if they have the Scott Catalogues. Scott Catalogues are usually located in the reference section of the library. Inside those catalogs you'll be able to locate the stamps you have by their country of origin. Most libraries will allow you to check out a few of the catalogues for a few weeks at a time. You could take them home and work on identifying the few stamps there. Who knows, you may get hooked and want to keep them and collect yourself.

Please post any other questions you may have. There will always be someone willing to help.

Welcome to the stamp community, Marcia.

sfgoda has already given you some good advice. Are the stamps mounted in an album?

You could also look on line at freestampcatalogue.com for some info . Condition , centering, whether they're mint , hinged, etc and other factors really do play an important part of a stamps value.
