Hello to all,

My aunt's unfortunate death and my being named her executor has thrust me in to the world of stamp collecting. We have discovered a collection that appears to be from the 1950's and earlier.

Many of the stamps are in an album called "Modern Postage Stamp Album" by Scott Publications. It contains US and International stamps.

Some of the stamps appear to be labeled with their Scott number. I think that is the right terminology!

Any have any suggestions on how to assess the value of the collection?

Sorry for your loss and welcome aboard. As far as assessing the value of your Aunts collection you may want to consider bringing it to a reputable dealer and let him or her have a look at it. If it it not very extensive you may have some luck on your own using the Scott catalogue. Catalogue value and actual value may be very different keep this is mind if you attempt to value the collection on your own. There are a number of great people here who can get you pointed in the right direction Welcome aboard!1

Thanks for the replies.

I am in the process of going through the collection as we speak. It is very interesting to say the least. Part of the collection was a stamp price list from 1959!

Needless to say, I think I will invest in the up to date version of the Scott Catalogue that you refer to. Does that resource also value international stamps? There appears to be a large number of stamps from around the world in addition to the USA stamps.

Next question...what is the best resource for identifying a "reputable" dealer? I am in Missouri.

Hi Handke04,

Welcome, and sorry for your loss. Perhaps you are a lawyer and know the probate laws and rules for your state. I handled a similar probate, and even though I felt well qualified to give an opinion, the probate judge "suggested" to me in rather direct manner to have it officially valued by an appraiser. I knew more than the appraiser, but I did as suggested. If I had it to do over, I would have first had it appraised by a stamp dealer, because the real value of the collection did not pay for the court approved appraiser.

If you could post photos of the US section up to 1900, I think we could help as to whether it is a "novice", "intermediate" , or "advanced" collector, as most of the value of US would be in that era, unless there are three zeppelins in the air mail section.

And prepare yourself that the actual value may be very much less than most non collectors imagine when stamps are 100 yrs old or more. But it is impossible to tell without visual images of the collection. We are a helping lot, and before anyone jumps me. Yes, sometimes the international sections are more valuable

When I used the American Philatelic Society directory of dealers, I received one hit for a dealer in MO that did appraisals.

Thanks for the responses. I will work on getting some images posted of the collection. From what I can tell, most of the stamps are post 1900. I look forward to hearing what kind of feedback you all have regarding the collection.

Handke04 ...i have to mention this...you said your Aunts album was a Scott Modern..thats a very inexpensive beginners album..i started with the 1949 Modern that cost $2.50 at the time..Scott catalogs cost $60 dollars apiece and you would need all 6 of them to go through all the A to Z countries...most decent sized libraries have scott catalogs in the reference section...why not save yourself a good piece of money and check out the library ????
