Actually Mandrake Root in the hands of a qualified Herbalist can be a very benificial plant. Some uses are as a pain killer, sleep inducer, and to induces vomiting and bowel movements.

By the way the fruit is quite tasty and harmless.

Thanks for the tip on the M&M website. I have spent the last 3 days at work...working hard of course (ahem)...and also looking at all the great photos.

I thought the Mandrake pills looked scary - some of the other medicines seem much worse. Family legend has it that a ancient relative was killed with a creosote home remedy for TB. Maybe it was off the shelf?

I can only guess that "wine of pine tar" is actually turpentine. I guess I'd try the Mandrake long before taking a belt of turps.
