Hello, I'm starting up an Australian collection and I have many and need help sorting. I have never collected any other country before other than U.S.A. Is this an actual overprint or another species all together?

I_Love_Stamps, welcome to the pleasure of collecting Australian stamps. I started about two years ago and am enjoying it immensely. The stamp on the left is Scott #189 and is referred to as a surcharged stamp. A used copy is worth $0.60. The one on the right since it is the same color as the surcharged one is Scott #183 and for used it is worth $2.50. |

Wow! seriously?? I like Australia already! Thank you very much as I am enjoying it. I really need a reference book or something so I can get them in some sort of order. Is there possibly a website that could oblige? Thank you. |

Hmmm, I've got literally thousands of pre-decimal Australian stamps and never seen the one with the surcharge before - it's amazing how that can happen! |

@ ROOS - THANK YOU very much! I was panicking about the order of these as I know next to nothing about these BUT I find them extraordinary in detail!
@ 64idgaf - I'd love them but things are a little tight right now as I have surgery coming up on the 26Th. After that maybe.
@ tonymacg - Awesome wartime cover! Thank you! |

LOL Here I go again. That stamp is what I have been told is a 'surcharge' to change the value of the stamp. Anyway, I guess it is still an 'overprint'. The topic of surcharges versus overprints was just recently, or still on-going actually at https://goscf.com/t/17083Chimo Bujutsu |

I think that's pretty interesting, I've never seen a two colour surcharge before. Also the overprint/surcharge thing is quite a conversation. I think basically a surcharge is an overprint, but an overprint isn't always a surcharge. |

You know what I have those same ones? I got these lovely items (and a whole bunch more) from AussieAl! I just love the Aussie animals and the lyre bird, platypus, Tasmanian Tiger.. I'll have to scan those this evening and post then here! I'm just blown away with Australian postage! P.S. Who is that handsome codger on those stamps anyway? Please excuse my ignorance (I'm American) lol |
