Hi Everyone,
I am going through some stamps that have airplanes on them.

Since I don't know if they are or are not airmail, I will just say "airplane" stamps for now.

Now I know that CCCP is Russia. I thought I would try to find the answer myself before coming here and asking..

So, I looked up in my Scott 2008 catalog, under Russia, in the "C" section, under Air Post....

I thought that all of the Russia airmail stamps would have the same "wording" on them so I would just look for that, but I see that not all of the airmail stamps from Russia don't have the same writing on them, so here I am asking you wonderful people.

I see some that have "koneek", others "abnonoyta" and "ahphkab.....

What can I look for, to let me know that the Russia stamp, is an airmail stamps?
Help, lolol...
thank you,
SueStamps

You are correct CCCP is the Soviet Union, and is listed under Russia in the Scotts catalogues.
Your first stamp is airmail SC#C107 from 1965, catalogue value $.70 (2003).
The second is not an airmail but regular post. SC#5985 from 1991. There are actually two versions of this one with different perforations. 5985 is per 12 X 12.5 while 5985a is 12 X 11.5. Same value $.25 (2003)
Sorry I don't have more current value, but I can't imagine it being much different.

The top stamp says "Aviapochta" which means "Airpost" or "Airmail".

The bottom one just has the usual word "Pochta" for "Post" (or "Mail" if you prefer).

Russia uses the cyrillic alphabet. "CCCP" is the cyrillic letters which stand for "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics"

Hi SueStamps

A good book to get is the Linn's Stamp Identifier. I have used it on occasion and I found that it was pretty good. You can order it from Amos Press:

http://www.amosadvantage.com/scotto...c=identifier

To find an alternate source just enter "Linn's Stamp Identifier" in the Google search box.

The APS also has anidentifier book but I think the Linn's one is more comprehensive.

There is another thread here concerning Cyrillic letters. If you learn the sounds represented by the letters, many times you can sound out a word and get a hint of the use of the stamp. In this case, on the top stamp are the letters that when sounded out give you aviaposhta. I know that the letter that looks like an upside down lower case "h" is usually given a "ch" sound, but in this case is softened to the "sh" sound.

Also these will help with Russian Air-Mails.

ABNA #1055;OYRA: (overprint): Russia, airmails.

ABNO #1055;O#1063;TOB#1071;: Russia, airmails.
Sorry didn't copy & Paste like I'd hoped. For Stamp identification, this site is great.
