If there is a thread on this software, please let me know.
To scan my stamps, I have an HP Photosmart printer and have been using the HP Solution Center software for scanning. I am thinking there may be better (free download) scanning software. What do you use? How satisfied are you with it?

I have an Epson Perfection 4490 Photo scanner and use the
software that came with it and it suits me fine.

For a bit of editing like trimming I use Canon's Zoom Browser which came with
my camera , Picasa 3 which I use for straightening and
Photoshop if I want to add arrows or script on a
stamp image.
Just simple stuff.

Most scanners use something called TWAIN as an interface which almost all imaging software can communicate with. If your scanner is currently working you should be able to install any software such as Picasa from Google or GIMP, both of which are free, and access your scanner from within that software. The good thing with TWAIN is that it looks identical no matter what software you are using.
I'm using an old version of Paint Shop Pro 8 mainly as I'm comfortable with it and the results are good.

Your scans are only as good as your scanner. High image quality scan rates don't necessarily mean great scans. I have a cheap Canon scanner that is several years old (LIDE25). It does ok but is not a fine art scanner.

I like the software that came with it, PhotoStudio 5.5, but I am certain that better software is available. The distributed software is easy to use and has good flexibility.

Usually, I fine tune with MS Paint to reduce file size because it is quick and easy.
If you are an artist and have the money, I've heard that Adobe Photoshop Pro is popular.
