Wow, that is a very clean set. Congrats.

I'm a little partial to these designs because I spent my youth growing up in my Grand Fathers old Lumber baron's "millionaire's mansion" in Jersey Shore PA. and the fireplace mantles and all the elaborate woodwork of that grand old house looks spot on to the design's on the border of these stamps. It's hard to describe what I mean really. They just make me sort of pine for a time long past I guess. Just call me sentimental I suppose.

That 4 cent is a beaut! The 2cent has nice margins on it also - nice buy!

The Pan-Am set was the first stamps I purchased off ebay 12+ years ago.

I was obsessed with trying to complete this set when I was a kid, but could never find them in my price range. On a whim, I had created my ebay account (in part to reserve my online user name) and within weeks I started browsing for stamps.

I remember feeling guilty about the $14 winning bid, and was nervous the seller would change his mind. What I didn't know at the time was that this was the beginning of a much needed market correction for stamps and I had the privilege of being in on the ground floor.

I can't emphasize enough what online auctions have done for philately!

Yes ILS, beautiful stamps. I especially like the 4c. nicely centred. It's one of two I still have to get to complete my set.
I too love the beautiful engraving. Quite elaborate for such tiny stamp.

OK, I know I probably shouldn't spill the beans on what I gave up for them but I will..lol Hold on to your seat now...I paid 99¢ @ for the top two (#294 #295) and $3.00/free shipping for the #296! how you like them apples! lol Thank you! I have been patiently waiting for YEARS for a set of these to come along.The timing was right and I jumped on it. I figured I wouldn't get em but to my surprise I checked my email this morning and VOILA! Although I was out bid on the rest of that set by 1 measly U.S. Dollar!

I should mention that I am currently trying to get most of what I can of a complete set of US commemorative & definitive postage stamps all in postally used but F to VF condition. It's a little harder than I thought it would be. I'm having a real good time running down my dream thanks to you all!

It seams that I am not the only one that has fond memories attached to this series of stamps. In a recent thread I was asked why I rarely collected anything newer that Sc#299. I think this post from an earlier thread kind of says it all.

"It is hard to forget your first stamp. In 1956 as a Cub Scout merit badge requirement, I bought my first stamps. In a 5 and 10 cent store I found a pack of "100 world stamps---with album". It was 49c, which was a lot of money for me back then. In this pack I found a Sc# 298 mint og nh. When I showed it to my parents they both almost fainted, my dad went nuts and started collecting. Hard to believe that was over fifty five years and 40,000 stamps ago. Thank you for asking this question and bringing back a flood of good memories.
