I'm going to start a little cover collection of early western US postal history. I enjoy the 1849 gold rush, early mining towns, local carriers, pony express and stagecoach covers. Heck I like anything related to the settlement of the American West.
I thought I'd share my first find and would love to see what forum members have collected.

Wells Fargo & Co blue cancel Marysville with red handstamp "Eureka Sierra Co." Also 2 unfortunate pencil notations that I may try to remove.

Langton's Pioneer Express was the earliest mule train and passenger service in what was to become Sierra County California and beginning in 1850 Samuel Langton established a pony express service between Marysville and Downieville. His company served both the local towns and mining camps in the northern Mother Lode region, from Sacramento north along the Feather and Yuba rivers, and east into present day Nevada.
Apparently the company was sold and renamed several times until Mr. Langton's death in 1864. It was sold in 1865 and eventually bought by Wells Fargo & Co.
