how lucky! Even if most of them are common, all you need is one good rare one to make it all worth your while. Maybe there is a whole page stuffed full of Graf Zeppelins? I have yet to find one in the hoard I inherited and added to my collection. Have fun! |

Oldtriguy1960, do I take it from your question the "bi-plane cancel" is a little more rare? Only ask because I have a nice one on a 1930 6c orange air-mail stamp, and not being a USA specialist I don't know anything about it. DavidR |

DavidR,
All I know about the biplane cancel is that I like it! I'd like to start a mini collection of USA airmail stamps that have the biplane cancel, I think that would be a neat page in my album. I don't know about the rarity of the cancel or even the date range of when it was used. That would be interesting to find out though.

Thanks very much ILS, mine must be one of the later types, as it is on a 1930 stamp. Great info! |

Look close at the C10s, you might find one of those C10 Lindburg double impressions. |

Just got done searching through these. Talk about countless hours, egads. The number of stamps was over 10,000, all between C7 and C74.
No major finds, no sleepers.
As I looked for nice crisp bullseye cancels, it became readily apparent just how scarce they are. Most stamps are covered with the wave/slogan portion of the cancel rather than the circular datestmp. Even when you do see them, circular date cancels are usually either (1) poorly positioned, (2) underinked, or (3) smudged.
I would guess that nice crisp socked-on-the-nose cancels occurred on 1 out of every 200-400 stamps, depending on type. It's a lower frequency than I was expecting.
That said, I did find some nice cancels. I'll do some quickie scans in a bit. |

The ones with the airplane cancels are my favorites. Adds a beautiful touch to the stamp. |

Some very nice SOC's and the biplane is one of my favorites. This one is always hard to find complete on a stamp. Also, Revenuecollector did you get the email that I sent? |

I've always liked the biplane cancel too. One of my faves. But I think the 'updated' twin prop version is pretty cool too. I've never seen one before. (I live a sheltered life.) |
