I think this is the first RAAF cancel I've come across in my collection. Does anyone know which RAAF base the number 63091 refers to? The PPA post office list only lists RAAF bases whose number starts with a 5, all of which are in Victoria. I presume a 6 refers to a different state.

Also, I wonder if these cancels are considered collectible. I can't see any evidence that cancels like this have been sold on ebay, or anywhere else for that matter.

Thanks for looking!

I presume that to be a wmk 15 (1938) Platypus.
There is dedicated info regarding these, source unknown,
I have seen it in print somewhere but cannot recall.

I have a few RAAF Ceylon WW2, Laverton and Butterworth post war.
and some mail went through Forces mail Homeland
via Little Sai Wan in Hong Kong.

You need dedicated literature to ID these,
but you have a good thread title, so hopefully
one day a Google searcher can assist.

Thinking aloud, I wonder if that is a base number or FPO?

What is PPA? maybe something I could be interested in.

"6" is the prefix for the state of Western Australia generally.

If Western Australia it possibly would be RAAF Base Pearce
(an alternative aerodrome for the NASA Space Shuttle)

Golly,
that was a good'un.
One for the weblinks database.

I tested a local pinprick post office I knew was Barton
but was changed to Piesse.
To my amazement I learn is was originally Buchanan Post Office.
(From the local Buchanan River I pass over every day to work)

RAAF Laverton 1962

I'd say most RAAF cancels give the name of the base. However, for some reason, some of them only give numbers.

Few Melburnians would choose to live in Laverton, and I can't think, off-hand, of any who'd choose Perth, either
