Referring to the image below, what is the long diagonal line on Washington's head? It doesn't look like a cracked plate. More likely debris on the plate or blanket?
It does not have the appearance of a crack, my best guess is that it was fiber from the batting. The batting was places on the back of the paper to increase pressure between the plate and the impression cylinder.
