That was fast. Thank you so very much wt1.

You are quite right that the download is large at 46+MB.

Verso typically means the back, so in printer's jargon it means the printing on the back of the pane of stamps; however, when they use the term "verso" and refer to the front, I imagine it is describing the text that is within the margins of the pane of stamps and not on the stamps themselves.

So, there will be selvage text on the sheet? If there is descriptive selvage text, then I keep the whole sheet.

Okay, obviously I'm missing something here, so somebody please give me an idiot lesson. In the previous threads, it's indicated that a 20 stamp sheet will cost $9.00, and then goes on to say that one of the press sheet will cost $45. Is this press sheet being issued with only five panes/sheets, or is my math completely awry? If it's only five panes to this press sheet, it seems to be a strange and awkward way to print them. Has the USPS ever produced a five pane press sheet before? I anxiously await your intellectual flogging.

I've always wanted to use that little emoticon

I may need a flogging too. I am guessing that if the prices are correct it is a four pane press sheet.

I considered that possibility; however, despite all their recent shenanigans, I've never heard of the USPS jacking up the price of $36 worth of stamps to $45. Might just be one of those unexplicable secrets of the universe!

If, as usual, USPS IS producing these press sheets in six panes, this is a darn good buy! Fifty-four bucks worth of stamps for only $45. Order'em fast before someone in USPS learns arithmatic. Gotta love those folks in Washington; they keep me in stitches with their lunacy.

Oops, pardon my spelling error - "arithmetic" vice "arithmatic". Can't believe I misspelled that one.

Could the USPS have transposed the numbers and they meant $54 instead of $45, meaning that it would be a Press Sheet with 6 panes of the stamps? If it is a typo on their part, they've very carefully carried it onto both USA Philatelic and their Postal Bulletin of 07/12/2012.

Yes! I missed it at first. You had to read deeper into USA Philatelic to realize that page 20 summarizes all of the 2012 Press Sheets ... and the USS Constitution/War of 1812 Press Sheet is going to be in a 1 x 5 format measuring 10.25" x 36.25". Very unusual format, but probably has something to do with the fact that it is being touted as a "souvenir sheet" rather than a "pane" of 20, so my guess is it may have a larger border or something to compensate. It's interesting that it's the only stamp this year in a 1 x 5 Press Sheet format, but I suspect if the War of 1812 series continues, future issues will keep to that format for consistency.

wt1, that's about the most logical answer imaginable. It's also not that unusual to have one mistake, as in this case, to be carried on in subsequent documents as you've pointed out. Thanks for your insight.

Now about the selvage of the War of 1812 issue. Seems to be pretty bland if USPS expects folks to buy an entire sheet. Please don't get me wrong. If the pane has a well-designed, attractive selvage as in the Hollywood Legends, the 2007 Settlement of Jamestown, Looney Tunes, or the recent Civil War issues, I have no problem with USPS expecting someone to purchase the whole sheet. But on this one and from what I've seen with the MLB All-Stars sheet, no real effort was made to design anything of merit to decorate the selvage. Granted that it is an attractive stamp, but twenty of the same stamp with no se-tenants or variations surrounded by a very plain selvage is just another ripoff as far as I'm concerned.

LATEST LIMITED EDITION NEWS: According to today's Postal Bulletin (08/09/2012), the Press Sheets for the War of 1812: USS Constitution stamp will be as follows:

Item No. 578484 Uncut Press Sheet WITH DIE CUTS will be in a print quantity of 1000.

Item No. 578486 Uncut Press Sheet WITHOUT DIE CUTS will be in a print quantity of 3500.

That's right, folks -- the USPS changed it again and now the "limited edition" variety will be the one WITH DIE CUTS!

Of course, the USPS can change those figures if demand warrants, but that's how it stands now.

Go figure.

It makes no sense to make the limited edition sheet the one with die cuts. Those stamps will have the same Scott number as the individual stamps. The sheet without die cuts is the one that will have a unique Scott number. If someone buys the imperf and is willing to trade a block of 4 for a major league players imperf se-tenant, shoot me an email.

For anyone who may not yet have purchased the USS Constitution (War of 1812) stamp that was issued today, here's what the full pane looks like:

Here's the reverse side:

Note the lower right corner of the reverse side of the pane shows a "plate position" designation, yet there are no plate numbers shown on the stamps. It is also curious that the Postal Bulletin announcement for this issue suggested that the plate numbers would be a "V" following by five single digits, yet they don't appear in print on the actual stamps.
