Am I trying to make something that isn't there?



Look at the S of U.S. an some of the other letters, what are those other markings? The actual cancellation is in black ink so its not part of the cancellation. Just an ink smear or is it a possible double transfer?

I believe that is an ink smear from the plate being poorly wiped and polished.

Art, I was thinking it might be rust-- but that is known on Plate 5L, and that would be the 11's.....so, never mind! :)
