I have a 641-63 (9c salmon) with a very strong precancel but no period -- I'm all but certain that it's not just faded away, because the rest of the printing is so sharp and very dark.
I think I've read that "period" and "no period" varieties exist on a number of precancels, just not sure if the Type 63 is one of them. There is usually a footnote in the catalog that refers to this.
Yes, the CALIF with no period is well known from SF, and has a footnote-5. My recollection is there is one no-period position on the sheet of 100. There is no published 'value', but they are not common.
