Another ebay listing from the same seller that recently posted those Hawaiian Official Mail precancels.

It is claimed to be a precancel from Preston, Washington (Type 904), yet the PSS Album Pages do not reference any precancels for either that city or type. Is that what helps to explain the large number of bidders and seemingly high bids being placed for this item? Is it an "official" precancel or a "favor" precancel? Or is there something I am missing as to it being a rarity?

Not that I'm in the market for such things, but I'd like to be able to distinguish between the real and fake precancels out there and what commands a premium versus what may just be a high priced conversation piece.

Thanks for any input.

I's a real precancel by a real precancel device, but was it really needed. No!
There is no need for this to exist. Just look at whom is the seller & where! You will likely notice it is the same seller on each of the questioned items. The use of the Type 904, not used until after 1998, will often be the choice of sellers, since it will be harder for a buyer to know if if is a legit issue or not.
This does not mean that this can't be legit, but that window of legitimacy is rather small!

Thanks. I thought as much, but just wanted to bounce it off SCF members who seem to be so well versed in precancels!

Odd denominations from popular states like Washington [and moreso Hawaii] are sought by aggressive bidders.
Dollar denomination precancels are also popular. The seller, a good egg and a friend, believes that making souvenier precancels from devices still in post offices is a philatelically beneficial persuit. This opinion is not shared by some in the precancel community. It is a part-time business for him, but not as lucrative as it appears. Travel expenses to visit post offices all over the USA are high and there are not many post offices which have devices and are collector friendly. Preston WA is not listed in the current catalog and the catalog updates for Washington have not been published yet. I presume it will be listed at 0.20.
