I was scouring ebay and ran across this awesome looking stamp that is listed as an essay but I have never seen any reference to it anywhere. It is awesome looking though.
Monroe Doctrine? ....$1500.??

Their are a ton of Essays that are not listed in Scott's. Many of them have come from the Brazer, Joyce and Caspery Collections.

These were the Continential Bank Note Co essays for there contract bid of 1873. They were awarded the contract but the designs were not approved. All the essays contained a large numeral in the design. The 6 cent essay were printed with and without the Monroe Doctrine label. 1873 was the 50th anniversary of the Monroe Doctrine.

What a missed opportunity. If the Monroe Doctrine stamp had been prepared and issued, it would surely be in the running for the first commemorative.
