How do "battered saveloys" differ from the common (and so 20th-century) corn dog?

I knew that various Italian dukes managed to fabricate ice cream centuries ago, which was a remarkable undertaking, but it is the Unilever connection, as far back as 1922, that was surprising.

@nigelc: It's a hot dog on a skewer, dipped in a thick cornmeal batter, and then deep-fried.

Persian chilled food 200BC ?
I'd like to see that!

Pluto pups, and fried twinkies
I'd not like to see that

Seems we are catching on in Oz, just recently
I was channel chopping, and happened onto
a chef (term used loosely) frying Pizza and all sorts.
Apparently fried Weetbix didn't work.

Put's a new twist to "Be still my beating heart"

Hello rod222,

I would like to thank you for your very informative post over on page 1 regarding the history of these companies! Fantastic information my friend and it will certainly help with my notes. It has also re-kindles an interest in these covers, so when I get my pile of 2s's in I will definitely be creating a section for these covers alone! I was lucky to inherit a strong collection of Postal History, which is unusual given that everyone and their brothers were soaking in those days!

Once prepared I will gladly post these covers for all to see!

Take care and Thanks again,

Skilo54

I wonder why sausage sales dropped in summer?

I don't believe that it was until well into the middle of the 20th century that modern shipping methods allowed us to buy foods out of season.

During the winter months most people had to subsit on grains and meats, as well as whatever vegetables or fruits they would be able to safely store during the winter. During the summer, when fruits and vegetables were readily available, consumption of meats diminished.

Edit: I just remembered that my mother's family when she was young used to buy a few cases of frozen fish in the winter, and just stack them up against the house, and use them as a source of winter protien.

Martha Washington is quoted as saying that the best part about living in the country is ready access to a garden and fresh veggies.
