Ahhh, brings back memories! Archived somewhere is my collection of Mr. Zip blocks, in matched sets. It was a sad day when USPS "retired" Mr. Zip.

An early one, before the introduction of the cartoon character "Mr. Zippy":

...Mr. Zippy, although retired, still shows his face every now and again:

I asked this question awhile ago as to what was the first stamp, last stamp, etc., that contained the Mr. Zip cartoon character in the selvage, but it received no response. I since found this excerpt of a news article from Mr. Zip's retirement (in 1986) that answers the questions for anyone so interested:

Found this image on the internet. (FYI, the Zip Code 39601 = Brookhaven, Mississippi). Which leads me to wonder how many people actually saved this sort of a post office announcement after all these years. I'd say that few probably still exist:

I must admit every time I see this thread title, the song "They call me Mellow Yellow" goes through my mind.

And I think of Sidney Poitier from "In The Heat Of The Night" - "They call me Mr. Tibbs!"

Here in Perth,
we spend so much time in the sun
we forget what we are doing,
(Too many pina coladas?)
so we put in any zip code we feel like at the time.
