I am curious as to the ID and approx values and in particular, what was the purpose of the "Protest" revenue?

Well duh where have I been? I use the swedish all the time for postage but completely forgot about his revenue IDs. Thanks stalizer. Unfortuantely, a few questions are still unanswered as to value and purpose of the PROTEST revenue (or did I overlook something?) |

Below is copied text from the "scribblings" periodical. " Protest. This is yet another usage that'll fool ya. Since the 1960's, most of us think of the word "protest" in an entirely different light than people did earlier. The 1860's usage is strictly business; if you were a landlord and your client didn't pay his rent, or your customer didn't pay for the goods you sent him, you could "protest" to the court and ask for redress." Look at this link about 1/3rd of the way down I'll start to explain most of the Revenues and what they was for. Hope this helps you a bit. http://www.rmpldenver.org/pdf_files...ibblings.pdf |

Unfortunately the stamps are of minimal value. You've got two that are punch canceled (most revenue collectors view punch cancels as being a notch below cut cancels, and cut cancels are a huge markdown to begin with) and two that are mangled.
Sorry. |

Three questions answered in one day. Wonderful! And now that I know I can find IDs on theswedishtiger. I should not have to bug anyone for an ID check, except possibly a sub-variety. In posting these I recalled having had a price sheet from that icon of stamp dealers, the epitomy of fair and accurate prices; the one, the only ... Mystic Stamp Company! (Does anyone notice the sarcasm?) I looked for it, found it (from 2003) and it has an R73 $1 Mortgage with perforations for $135.00. You weren't kidding, revenuecollector, when you said punch cancels pretty much kills a revenue's value. |

The "Value", in my humble opinion, is in the eye of the beholder and not in some silly number assigned to it. To my eye they are nothing but pleasing. Just for a moment pretend it was worth a thousand bucks. Would you sell it? That's a question only you can answer, but I can give you my answer in a hurry- simply NO. I acquired it to enjoy it; and enjoy it I will! So don't get discouraged. ~Jay |

Thanks Jay for your kind words. Actually, I am not discouraged and someday I will sell nearly all of the few revenues I have, not to make money, but mainly to stick with my decision to specialize in 19th century manuscript cancels. I had intended to collect only manuscript cancels on postage not revenues. BUT I am awaiting delivery on a revenue. I bought it only because of its absolutely gorgeous manuscript cancel. I never even bothered to see what the stamp was worth, which is most likely minimal and probably less than I paid for the stamp. If you want the $1 green bi-color stamp, its yours no charge. Just let me know. |

Thank you revstampman. I was wondering just what the R73c would be with the punch cancel. Considering that it came in a stock sheet full of revenues I purchased a few years ago for $2.00, that makes me quite happy. Actually, I'd be happy even if it was only a buck or two but the extra unexpected value is a nice bonus. |

I"ll second Jays opinion on value, the very first thing that drew me to stamps and revenues in particular was the beauty of the engraved artwork. I wouldn't mind if they weren't $$$$valuable$$$$ one bit. |

Just let me know. I can't count the number of stamps with nominal catalog values that I paid non-nominal prices for strictly due to the cancels. There's any number of cancels out there that will turn 25-cent stamps into $100 stamps (or more). Speaking of the green and black stamp above and gorgeous manuscript cancels, the one below is possibly the finest in my collection. It only catalogs $2.00. I paid $3.50 for it at a show last year, but would not sell it for $50 or even $100. It's a once in a lifetime example, in my opinion. Talk about penmanship... |

That is gorgeous penmanship! I am jealous! I just checked my ebay and the one I am waiting for is on a $2.00 Conveyence. There were quite a few bidders on it. Cost me $3.58 plus shipping. I sure hope I receive it undamaged. I had it shipped to PA and when my friend received it he said the envelope it came in was soaked and all the contents fell out when he picked it up. I'll post it when I get it next week. |
