this arrived today and as I thought when I saw the pic the points go up not down, but checking the the grill its a e grill 16x14 points, it is not listed in scott but the 87 is as points up but mine has a dash where the price would be (its very out of date), I can't seem to find any info on an upside down grill on the net so I was wondering if someone could have a look in a newer scott to see if it says any more info or even a price

razers-- just checked my 2010, and there is still a dash for a #87 Grill points up, and no listing for a #88 with grill points up.

You sure you counted the points correctly-- are there any very light points? You might use Bill Weiss' trick by scribbling a pencil on a piece of paper, rubbing your finger on the carbon, and then on the stamp. Won't damage the stamp, and you can erase and not damage the stamp. If there's a hidden row or two-- that would be really cool... #83 is a great stamp....

Good Luck, Ray

Looks like a points down grill to me. I would say it is a #94.

this is the back of the stamp, next to a stamp with a well defined e grill. The grill is very clear the points go through the face of the stamp... that is points up right or have I got confused on these grills again

If you look at the square voids in the target cancel on the face, the only conclusion you should reach is the grill is a points down.

but that isn't the case though, I asked this question I while back because it was doing my head in, and was told that points up goes through the face of the stamp and points down goes through from the back of the stamp, in my eyes it's backwards and it should be the otherway round.
but this is a pic of an A grll and the A grills are described as points up and the points go through the face of the stamp

I think you are being deceived by the A grill pic. Your stamp is a points down grill. I have several 88's and 94's and they all look like yours.

The attributes of the grill is from the face (front) of the stamp. If the points are "pushed" through face they are points down, if they go through the back, up toward the face, they are points up. All the grills posted on this thread are points down including the all over grill which is probably an essay as many points down all over essays are known.CORRECTION - All the grills on this thread except the A grill are points down. The A (and C) grill always look funny to me because of the female devise used for grilling.

The pic RE posted is from Roger Kirby's site-- here is the one directly below it, looking more like points up:

Hope this helps...Ray

razorsedge, notice on your stamp in question, that the stamp area within the squares is free of cancel ink, except in the overinked area at the bottom of the cancel. If the points were up, the center of the squares would be inked and the square outline would not be inked. Yours is clearly points down and appears to be 14x16 points: an E grill.

Now I'm completely confused those stamps the grills are going in different directions but they are both grills down and the 3 f grills go through the back of the stamp are they grills up or grills down and the I grill I have goes through the back so what is that? I thought I had got the grill but now I'm completely lost... Come back washingtons all is forgiven

Here is a C grill -- the points are up -- can't show the reverse as the stamp is on cover.
