An interesting pictorial from The New Yorker Magazine as to the history of the US Postal Service in 14 period covers from 1927 to the present day:

A great link, thankyou. The various topics illustrate what an integral part of life the mail service is - wherever you live in the world. Still is, to a certain extent, I think, even with the interenet revolution.

What is, perhaps, inadvertently interesting, is a comparison between the cost of !st class postage on the date of each cover, as compared to the cover price of the magazine.

For most of the early dates, the magazine cost around 5 or 7.5 times the cost of a stamp. Currently, though, it is close to 15 times.

Implying that there has been a very significant change in the price relationship in which the cost of that 1st class stamp has gone down to around half of what it had been as compared to the news stand price of The New Yorker.

In addition to awful issues wrt locations and labor costs, there might be some merit to the claim that the pricing model at the USPS is broke.
