Here is a rather obscure set of stamps I picked up years ago. These are Commercial (Business) Overprints used in the Phillipine Islands many years ago.

I obtained them from a gentleman who lived there. I wish I knew if he was still alive. I would like to thank him again for them.

You don't see these much, so for those that have never seen them, here they are. For those that have, here are some you may NOT have seen.

Bob

Just an anti-theft deterrent!

The "Manila, PI" was used by 3 firm Brian Roxas Co.,Howard Lux Co. & Rambler Shoe Co. starting on June 20, 1923 & is known on 10 values.

The "H Manila, PI" was first used on March 22, 1926 on 8 different values.
The "Heacocks, Manila" has no official date of useage on 11 values.
Both were only used by Heacocks, a jeweler.

The "A Manila, PI" was used first April 19, 1926 by Alkans, sporting goods,on 7 different values.

The "C. S. Manla, PI" was used first January 1, 1927 by Camera Supply Co. on 9 values.

The "Rambler, Manila" date is not mentioned was used on only 2 values.

The rarest is the "Manila, PI" with one one bar line that is above the city. No first date of usage mentioned.
But can be found on 3 different values.

These issues were often mention in precancel guides & publications, but were not precancels.

The "R.S." you have there is not mentioned.

Earlier references to the One-Line-Over variety have been shown to be incorrect. There are at least 15 different denominations, not 3. I was lucky enough to get the 2-cent at the Madison WI convention.

What kind of value do these have? I know that most of these are of minimal value as "normal" used stamps.

To anyone interested in the Philippines Commercial Overprints, and particularly the Heacock's overprint, the link to this website has quite a bit of interesting information and illustrations of usage (note there are several pages of listings):

The R.S. overprint of my original posting is that of Rambler Shoes. Used for 1 year in the mid-1920's.

To: "revstampman", the value is higher than the stamp itself due to the rareity and collectability factor. They range on ebay from $3 to ?? upwards.

To: chasa. Never ran across the one liners. Will have to start looking again I guess. Thanks.

To: wt1. Thanks for the link. Learned things I did not know. I wish I had their collection!

If we had a blasted stamp store within 300 miles (which I don't) it would make things a whole lot easier!

For pricing - ebay results are telling - this is one of the commoner denominations - they typically sell in the 2 to 5 dollar range.

I have seen the rarer ones on ebay over 200$, but not over 300$.

It is interestying to note that on ebay a large percentage of the dealers selling these items do not know what they are. I have been sending notes to them teling them that they technically aren't precancels (in the purest state) but a commerical overprint used for security and advertising. Just thought I would share.
