Well,I finally found a #297 that had decent centering. I have 2 of all of them with the exception of #295. What do you think? These are almost certainly one of my favorite sets. Please enjoy! -Jeff

Very nice indeed. One of my faves too. I've just got two more to get, then it's on to a mint set! |

Great Job !! It's always satisfying to complete a set and I couldn't agree more that they are one of the best sets to enjoy. I myself am very close to completing my set but I'm still trying to procure the #299 (10cent) but I've been outbid on the last 3 that I liked. There is a beautiful one ending in a couple of days that I've been targeting. |

I finally got my last one a month or so ago. And I have to agree... It's a very nice set, the design is excellent. Your 299 is way nicer than mine though. Congratulations on finishing your set! They are very nice copies. |

Good for you. I still only have the first two, will have to work on the others.

Thank you! I have 2 #299's (if you look closely you can see it peeking out behind the other) but one has a minute tear on it and the other a heavy cancel. I'm only displaying the sound ones but I definitely need to upgrade that #295 (red train) to one with better centering. It's sort of a challenge to find these with decent centering believe it or not!

Yes! Those stamps blown up like that really bring out the detail. In fact, I never noticed until now that the 10-cent variety has images of eagle's heads above each circle containing the denomination. |

Are those eagle heads? Are they not stylized fish heads belonging to the fish body and tail going up the side of the stamp? |

Quote: Are they not stylized fish heads belonging to the fish body and tail going up the side of the stamp? I guess you're right now that I look at the image more closely. It's absolutely amazing what they can engrave into these early stamp designs. Modern issues don't compare to them at all. As long as we're on the subject of images on these stamps, what is depicted on the 2-cent stamp that has what looks like a naked woman on either side of the central image. Is it supposed to depict a mythical goddess or something? |

Guess back then any artistic design was fair game. Looks like the woman on the left is holding a wreath and the one on the right is holding a ribbon. And each has a wing above her. |

Here is a close up of the 2¢, I have duplicates of this one but prefer the one with the selvedge. This was the first US Stamp to show a Woman's Breast....might be the only that I'm aware of. |
