Pages for sale on ebay,
Is it OK to demount and sell individual countries?
I was thinking a few countries I would like to purchase
2004 onwards, Germany, Australia etc. (Stanley Gibbons)
How do members view this practice?

Rod, do you mean there are pages for sale on ebay ? Second hand ?
I think it's a good idea. A Worldwide catalogue would be very expensive to ship and as many collectors only need a part of it, then it's a great idea.
I have a couple of countries myself which I keep in a folder.

yes, I see guys stripping Scott catalogues and selling
sheets of countries circa $5
I thought it was a good idea, but I wasn't sure it was legal.
The thought of tearing a book still horrifies me
but my old 1993 catalogue is dog eared and yellowing
so I guess this practice has its advantages because
these books have a reasonably short life.

If any stampers on SCF do it with Gibbons
I'd be interested.

Before I bought my used catalogues, I bought a few coutries. I thought it was a great Idea. Especially if you collect only a couple of coutries.

I did go to the library and photocopy pages from a Scott catalogue that interested me at one time. Hard to do as the pages curled into the spine of course and so the photocopy lost clarity when the page curved inwards and you could not get the whole thing.

Thus the pages sliced out of a catalogue do sell, another reason they do.

I should think it is legal as you have bought the book and you can do what you wish with the book once you own it. It is a used book sale. Not many cut up a book though so perhaps not worthwhile for the publisher or owner to follow through on a lawsuit. It does promote that particular cataloue so I would think the owner of the copyright would be pleased that his catalogue was being sliced apart and sold as perhaps one day that buyer would purchase a catalogue in its entirety.

I've seen this type of auction for several years now. The thing that I don't understand is how they can do it since Scott doesn't start each new country on a new page.

Using Scott 2009 as an example, if I bought the pages for COLUMBIA, I would also get the first page and half of COMORO ISLANDS. So those pages couldn't be sold?

Anyway. If you buy, please let us know your experiences.

Are they actual album pages or prints from the PDF version of the album?
If the latter I would guess this isn't allowed.
I have bought older albums of Amazon marketplace for a few quid and also found a 1947 SG Europe in a charity shop recently.

Kirk, either they copy the adjacent page, or they
consider Comoro not popular, photocopying would be my guess.

First off, I have to find out how they classify these pages
when they advertise.

Anthony -- I'm not sure they even make a CD/PDF version of the newer catalogs?

I haven't purchased them myself, but I have heard from others that they are the actual pages, removed from a catalog.

Printed copies of PDF or color copies would be an infringement of the Amos copyright and I know Amos would be on that like white on rice.

Some sellers will photocopy the beginning or ending page if the adjacent country listing has already been sold. It is illegal to do that. So check with the seller to make sure they are giving you the original pages.

I think I have answered my own question.

Some of the auctions are listed as SHORT -- meaning they are missing the last page of listings (which was sold to someone else as the first page of another country.

Anthony I bought some about 3 years ago when I didn't have any catalogues. I think I bought Germany, Poland, France and Great Brittain. I paid under $10.00 for each country and it was great.

A couple of years ago I bought several Scott "separated" country pages, some more popular places such as Czechoslovakia and Austria and lesser popular such as Gilbert and Ellice, Tuvalu and Kiribati. I was surprised when they arrived all the pages were genuine, including beginning and end. The price was very reasonable.

khj..I may not be 100 % correct, but if I own a complete set of Scott 2012 catalogs, I have the right to duplicate them as a backup copy.
The same rule applies to computer software. If you purchase a package, lets say Microsoft office, you are allowed to burn the discs, as a backup copy.

Again, I could be wrong

Whatever the verdict I think its a great idea to purchase individual country pages
