Hello, please forgive my ignorance on this matter, I am neither a collector or enthusiast as such.

I recently purchased from the Royal Mail 7 sets of first day covers of the Royal Mail Crown Jewels collection.

My intention was to use these to post my wedding invitations. I thought it would be a nice idea as I had proposed to my fiance in the Crown Jewels house of the Tower of London, a location that has been of mutual fascination for the both of us since we have been together.

I felt that the stamps would be a nice link to my proposal while at the same time serving as covering the postage of the invites themselves.

I was looking at the sets last night and got the feeling that I am not going to be able to use them, as essenitially they are technically 'used'.

Can anyone please confirm this for me ?

It looks as though I may have to buy the stamps again, but this time as regular stamps and not first day covers.

Apologies again for my ignorance in this matter if it seems like a very obvious question.

Confirmed.

1st Day Covers are meant for collectibles and because the stamps have been 'canceled' on the envelope, are not valid for postage.

You'll need to purchase new stamps for your mailings, but give her the covers as a keepsake. Maybe you, or your children, will be stamp collectors.
