A nice article on stamp collecting:

http://countylive.ca/blog/?p=16471

I found this quote particularly interesting:

Quote:
...of the 196 recognized countries in the world, 103 of them have become independent or changed names since 1960...

I knew there were a considerable number of country names that changed throughout the years, but had no idea there were over 100 in just the past 50 years alone.

Nice little article.

I thought I was going to see some dinosaurs at first, going by the thread title.

All the new countries are neat. Always something new in stamp collecting and postal history.

All you folks who aren't collecting yet, jump on board before it's too late and you are in a new country yourself.

I somehow want to go read W. Somerset Maugham now for some reason. Colonial times and all.

Nicely written.

The lower value stamps were usually chosen; quantity winning hands down over quality, as every young stamp collector kept pencilled in the front of his album a running total of how many stamps were housed within its covers.

John Lennon went from 200 stamps to 657 stamps, it seems.....
