Every stamp issued 1981 through 2011 Mint Unhinged $750
I am not purchasing, but was curious as to what SCF members thought as to value?
Standard govt issue stamps only no varieties.
Vendor claims 50% of face.
Thanks.

I'm a little surprised there would be $1500 in face value there, but I don't collect anything after the late 90s so am not sure what all is in the lot. My observation has been that online auctions are going for 75-80% of face, so 50% is a good deal. |

I've been buying some modern Canada for face and below. And a few of the more unusual things, I've paid a premium.
So, I think half of face is reasonable. If you were buying 'postage lots,' you probably wouldn't be able to get below 75 or 80% at best -- and those would be all duplicates, blocks, sheets, etc.
You don't mention catalog value, but I will add that Unitrade is fairly generous with their values. Ergo, 50% of Face is probably 20-25% of Catalog.

So is it being sold in Candian, Australian or US $$$. If 50% off face value, Canadian $'s should be used.
50% off is always reasonable but if 50% off Canadian face then sold in US $'s is very questionable. Do more searching you do better! |

As I read the announcement, it appears to be referring to half off the issue price of each "lavishly illustrated" yearbook, rather than the face value of the stamps themselves.
My assumption can be validated if the face value of stamps issued by Canada in 2010 is less than $62.50 -- does anyone have a catalog of Canadian issues? |

You lost me there warrehouse?
You're aware that US$1 = $C1.03 = $AUS1.01
Doesn't seem like such a big variation to me? |

Hmm, that changes things Rod. I suspect the seller is stating that he is offering the stamps at 50% of the original cost of the Yearbooks which no doubt were originally priced possibly significantly in excess of face value. |

Quote: As I read the announcement, it appears to be referring to half off the issue price of each "lavishly illustrated" yearbook, rather than the face value of the stamps themselves. Rod I would research this a little more and ask a few questions. What are the total face for each year in the yearbooks as these type of sets usually rarely have a complete issued set. Yes, 50% of face is a great deal but again I suspect as others stated that it is 50% of book sale price. |

Hi Rod,
I have a few Canada Year books within this period.
The 1991 one retailed for C$26.95 at the time and included C$24.93 in stamps. So I would suggest you expect the value of the actual stamps to be 90% of the year books in value.
Also, I have come across the Year Books with the stamps 'stuck' in their holders! These year books do not always go to collectors and the stamps can be compromised. You should ask the seller about the stamps and also ensure that they are included (ideally in their original envelopes within the book).
FYI - In 2010 the Canada Unitrade Catalogue lists this item at C$55.00. About 200% of their original sell price.

Thanks everyone, interesting spin I hadn't considered the book price. Lots to consider when looking at pricing. Quote: usually rarely have a complete issued set. Crikey, what a minefield! These books must trap the newbie collector, I see these Aussie books (without stamps) basically given away these days, illustrating the axiom, what is made for collectors, is not worth collecting. |

Had a little time so did some looking for you. These are in U.S. funds.
Year / Retail / Face total 1983---00.00---21.57 1984---18.50---00.00 1985 1986---00.00---17.38 1987---22.95---18.37 1988---23.95---17.76 1989---23.95---20.62 1990---00.00---25.00 1991---00.00---24.93 1992 1993---00.00---30.10 1994 1995 1996---39.95---34.00 1997---44.95---28.00 1998---46.95---39.00 1999 2000---41.95---28.00 2001---45.91---35.00 2002---49.95---44.00 2003---49.95---35.00 2004---54.95---41.00 2005---54.95---38.00 2006 2007---56.95---38.00 2008---58.95---37.00 2009 2010 2011
Something else to consider, I know it is great to start off a collection with a deal to acquire a larger lot but the actual books usually have little or no value. The 2010 yearbook would be a exception as it is a Olympic issue with collectors looking for this set. Hope this helps some. |

The Canada yearly collections are beautiful books, well worth the money. Older books are simpler and have a sale price fairly close to the total face value, but that spread has grown in recent years as the books have become more lavish. For the last couple of years, they no longer tell you how much the total face value is.
Fortunately, I can find records of the original selling price for most of the various years in an old Darnell catalogue. Here are a few years' worth of info:
1983: $21.57 face value, $24.95 sale price 1989: $20.62 face value, $23.95 sale price 1995: $30.08 face value, $39.95 sale price 2001: $36.96 face value, $45.95 sale price 2004: $40.16 face value, $54.95 sale price 2006: $41.56 face value, $56.95 sale price 2007: $32.39 face value, $56.95 sale price
I can come up with a total for all years from 1983-2007, minus 2005: $700.00 face value, $884.35 sale price
With the missing years, the total face value of all the books in your lot should be somewhere close to CAN $875.

Most of the books from the 80's and 90's were soft cover and not very well done. However the more recent years are quite nice hardcovers but unless you have a big empty hole on the bookcase to fill they don't do much for value. I am pretty sure there are varieties in the year packs such as coil and booklet singles but mine are all sealed so havn't checked. I would let all mine go for face value of stamps contained, which is super fair, so if below that its still no a bad deal but doesn't look like truly 50% of stamp face. |
