I've been looking for one of these since I started collecting again, and managed to get one a few days ago. My real name is Kevin Dalby..look at the bottom corner letters :)

Interesting! Is it possible for everyone to find their initials on a penny red? Or were some letters not used? |

Quote: Interesting! Is it possible for everyone to find their initials on a penny red? Or were some letters not used? Not possible for everyone unfortunately. The letters are check letters for security. So a person could not cut apart a stamp and use one part with certain letters with another part with non-matching letters to make a whole stamp and use that for the postage required. The stamps were printed in plates of 240 stamps each, of 20 rows of 12 stamps each. Row 1 AA AB AC to AL Row 2 BA BB BC to BL Row 20 TA TB TC to TL For those of us (like me) whose initials do not fit within the Queen Victoria era corner letters we have to make do with some other favorite initials or combination of letters. Type in "penny red initial initial" in the search function of ebay to find your own initialed penny red stamps for sale. To wit: I typed in penny red jj and got eleven examples! cool! |

For someone who has been a lifetime intermittent collector (is that an oxymoron?) is this stamp Great Britain Scott#33 issued in 1864? |

The exhibit of the plates and covers of the penny black and the penny red imperf is impressive. I wonder just how much time was needed to get all the RF letters. Also, where are the sources necessary for the extensive searching? Also, pretty deep pockets were needed. All in all a great effort and exhibit.
Oh---didn't mean to forget congratulating Maiden on the stamp with the initials. Good for you. |
